Good Morning every one, it is yet another vile day here dull, and dreary, threatening rain any moment, i have decided i shall grow rice, next year we have the weather for it lol. I have just been watching a Seagull, trying to raid a neighbours pond it came over i looked up and it landed on his chimney pot, i thought thats a heron, it was massive i have never seen one that big before in my life it landed, then it took off and circled so i saw its legs and new then and as it got close it was indeed a seagull, it landed back on the chimney to the disbelief of a Magpie who immediately started to go at it flying at it noisily as top say shove off how dare you. The Seagull took no notice of the Magpie, at all only taking off when it chose top it circled the pond, then kept returning i am sure when it came in for the first time it had something small in its mouth. The neighbours, had gone out luckily they came back and i shouted across what was happening he shouts are you sure it wasn't the Heron, because ones been about after them i said no look its still on your roof, lol they had come down the road in the car and not seen it, how i dont no it was massive its been shooed off now i think as i cant spot him. Morning all, not a very nice one for us but it is warm.Seen the swans a couple of times over the weekend and don't they look majestic swimming on the lake. Will be great if they breed. I was also watching the fish yesterday, whoever was fishing was at the wrong side of the lake. Jill E, nice to hear that your Dad has settled in to his new home, you may find that he will be much better with people around him all day and have things to do. Being on their own soon brings them down to a low ebb, so don't worry about him as he will be fine.At least you have got him into a good home which is a good thing. Elsie

Val,
Couldn't agree more, I would take on a fieldful of emus rather than a spider! The other night I stayed up later than John to watch the end of a programme, a HUGE spider(I swear it had shoulders!) ran across the floor and behind the T.V. I had to leave the tv on standby all night, I couldn't go near enough to turn it off! Thank the Lord for remote controls otherwise the telly would have been on all night. How sad am I??? Every night now I'm waiting for it to come out again! Pathetic I know but just can't bear the things.

I posted a few days ago but I think it got lost in the airways. I had said to Karen that I would rather face an Emu than a spider, how sad am I. I am sad to think that Mabel has gone to Africa and we will have to wait till next spring to see if she will return, however time seems to pass quickly these days so maybe not too long to wait. We are having a very mixed bag of weather at present, sunshine then torrential rain then sunshine again, a typical scotttish summer. I havnt seen the black swans for a few days are they still on the lake. Jill I am glad to hear that you dad has settled into his new home as you say it is a worrying time for you and you must be happy that he is happy. I printed off a pic of the owlets on 12th July and again on the 13th August and it is amazing how quick they grow. Can anyone tell me if Mr Farmer had any luck with the emu eggs. Val Perth

Morning all - Mary, Bec, Janince thanks for your kind words - Yes Im sure dad will settle in once he gets to know a few more people and gets into the new routine. Its still early days yet, but at least his tv works and he has a few mementoes around him like pictures, books and a few tresured ornaments etc. He's a sociable person but a bit shy to start with but everyone is so friendly and caring - they won't let him get depressed! And yes its a weight off our minds knowing thre's someone there 24 hours especially at night if he feels poorly, he won't be all alone. So a huge thanks one and all for thinking of him.
Just been for a run around the cams and it all looks lovely and sunny at Denury this morning. I hope it stays that way so Mr. Farmer can get his hay dried! OK almost time for The Archers, I'll pop back and check on the cams a bit later.....Jill(E)

SO pleased your Dad seems to have settled in, it sounds a lovely place, I'm sure you'll feel happy knowing he has 24 hour care, it's a huge weight off your mind. My husbands sister lives in such a place in Lytham St Annes, she's only 65 but is slightly mentally handicapped. She loves the place, they have regular entertainment and have trips out also.
Haven't been able to view many of the cams the last few days have been helping a neighbour with starting his family tree. He's got going now so have been able to view tonight, though it's been a bit of a quiet night so far.

Jill, Im sure your Dad will settle in just fine after a little while, my father in law is in a simailar type of home, but he has made lots of friends (mostly ladies!!! Lol) a one particular lady makes him meals and gives him food, I tease him that she is his girlfriend to which he just laughs off, but seriously your Dad will soon settle in and then just you wait, he will be telling you all the goings on with the other residents ect, ect!!! Gosh thank you all so much for your good wishes for my dad, Karen, Elaine, Sue.notts, and the anonymous well wisher. After visiting him today I am very impressed with the home and the level of care there - the staff are absolute angels, and can't do enough for him, there are already at least 4 or 5 residents that he has made friends with, and as its a Methodist Church run home there are a couple of retired ministers there, and they have church services twice a week. Everyone is on first name terms, staff included. There are outings he can go on, he has been allocated a raised flower bed that he can tend, and its right outside his window so he can see it. Bird feeders are not encouraged near the building because of the mess but there is patch of garden where they can have them, and a greenhouse he will be encouraged to use (with help of course!). His room is quite small and compact but it has an en suite shower room and he has plenty of room for his recliner chair, beside his bed, his own tv and a side table as well an the furniture they provide. The dining room is just a few yards from his room and there are tv lounges, quiet lounges, a coffee lounge area, a library, internet room (for those that want it). We had a marvellous bbq in the garden this afternoon and there are some wonderful volunteer ladies who sort all that our free of charge and they put on these "family" parties once every two months. We are convinced that once he's settled in and is used to the new routine, that he will be fine, and join in with some of the activities and make friends with new people. Everyone couldn't be friendlier, and there's even a resident budgie! Yes he will feel a bit new still for a while but we are confident it will be a new lease of life for him! He is 88 too Sue, like your mum, and not used to change, but we are sure he will be just fine. And my sister only lives five minutes away - she can pop down on her bike! So all in all I am very pleased and think it is a good move. Sorry for waffling on - but I wanted to thank all of you who sent good wishes...this is a very caring forum and I am very touched....Jill(E)

Good evening Everyone from a dreary, misty, drizzly, windy Plymouth, not the best kind of weather to spot migrating birds or for giving dance performances up on breezy Plymouth Hoe on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the 50th anniversary of the Plymouth Senior Citizens Forum - yes, I am a member!
Just seen the two owlets dozing on a beam in the barn; they look so cosy.
Someone has mentioned a late second brood of sparrows; here too, in a local barn there is a swallow's nest with some chicks in it and mum is still flying in with insects every few minutes. Do hope the weather will calm down for the chicks to fledge safely. Rosemary (Plymouth)

Been in an hour now, from the Show today. Won £1-10, which more than covers me 50p entries!!
Mary llandudno, yes I think it was too small for a flying saucer, but one can never tell !!. Whatever it was, it was spooky. Anyone else have any theories, Mr Famer what would you say it was? Just had a thought (be careful now, you might get a headache) could it have been a ball of fog/mist? Being in a valley, it is possible.
Jill when my Mum went into Sheltered housing she went from a 3 bed house to a flat, that was bedsit, kitchen, toilet, shared bathroom/showers, but a lovely communal lounge. Within a month, she was going to the lounge for morning coffe, joining in the monthly Coffee/Raffle morning and going on organised outings.
It is a shock to their system, but very slowly they adapt. I think its the children, you and your family, that feel anxious for them. But keeping postitive in front of them helps.
It been a dreadful day weather wise down here.
When I had a quick look at the cams very early this morning I saw what looked like fish just under the water on the Kingfisher cam.
Went there again about 10 minutes ago and a lovely clutch of ducks swimming around. Emus were eating quietly. Off now to get a cuppa. Will look in later. Lorna from Devon

Jill i do hope your dad can settle to life in a care home as well as my mum did she has been there now for 41/2 years and really loves it. she has met new friends and old ones and i don't think she would have been with us if she had tried to carry on on her own after we lost dad. She is 88 now and her health is fairly good for her age. her legs don't work as she keeps telling us but she manages to get around with a frame. Her bedroom is on the back of the building and it overlook lovely old trees and they have resident squirrels that you can watch playing as well as lots of birds and insects. the only downside to it is that the county council for our area are selling off all their care homes and this is one of them so we don't know how much longer any of them can stay there. It is such a crying shame as this is their homes and they now have nothing left of their former lives except one or two small memento's.
This crazy idea of everyone moving into a flat and having 24 hr care if needed is OK for anyone who has a home of their own still with furniture they can take with them but these poor souls who have already had to part with their belonging now have the worry of not knowing which of their friends will be going with them or where they will be going as until things are finalised no one knows what is to happen. Sorry about the rant but this has been a very sore point to me just lately and i have even been to council meetings to try and get the decision changed all to no avail. i just hope they remember what they did when they are all in need of care in their later lives. Enough said take care all. Sue. n.notts

Just checked in on the BOT cam and both owls are on the try, you can really appreciate the colour of these beautiful birds during the day light, it's amazing how quickly they have grown! Bec

Mr Farmer thank you for the close up of the kingfisher it is the first time this year I have seen it, also thanks for the closeups of the fish in the lake sadly not being and angler I dont know what they were but they were huge. You should have a competion for your holidaying angling guest for the largest fish caught that year!
Jill I am sure your dad will soon settle. Many dont want to move then when are settled wonder why they didn't do it before. I am sure Sue would agree withme on this as her mum is in a home. They get the care and attention 24/7 which we cannot do sadly.
Karen the rain waited here until I had put two lines of washing out and then started to do something else it was only when I looked through the window I could see it teeming down got soaked fetching it in! You really amaze me with all that you manage to do in a day! It makes me tired somedays just reading your posts. Well think I will go and see if I can get some washing dry now.
I wonder if any one has heard anything from Robin? Do you think we could all send him some vibes to get in touch somehow? Elaine

Aw Jill, I could have cried for your Dad when i read your post its got to be one of the most upsetting things of bieng old and going in a care home i am dreading that situation, its not something i look forward to. Its when you said he was the new boy bless him Jill, and the parting of his belongings now that is hard to do, i am sure he will settle soon and be happy i hope so then its a weight off your mind too. I hope they have bird feeders there to keep him cheered up a bit he will soon mix in i am sure. Its pouring down here it waited till i put my washing out of course well it can stay there till i say lol i am in one of those moods quiet but quite dangerous i think i am tired lol. I have done most of my jobs today i have lifted some Lillie bulbs and i am changing the soil. I have killed a few Lillie bugs too a about 6 in all i detest them they are the most beautiful of reds but deadly to me blooms. Karen Stoke

Morning everyone - Im glad it looks like is stopped raining at Denbury! Poor Mr. Farmer I hope you can manage to salvage some of that wet hay! The swans are gliding by on Cam2 as well as a few ducks and other birds I cant quite make out. Looks very calm there now!
Just off to visit my dad who has moved to a new 24-hr care home - downsized from a 2-bed flat with 2-bath and kitchen, down to one single room! A very big upheaval and a bit upsetting having to dispose of things he's had around him all his life. Family pieces I've seen from my childhood ...I've been able to take a few things but don't have room for any of the furniture except an antique chest of drawers - I hope it fits in the back of my sisters car! The care home are having a residents' family bbq today so a good opportunity to meet other folk and the staff there. And hoping dad is settling in - he's only been thre since last Wed so feels a bit like a new boy at school still!
ttfn - have a great Saturday everyone....Jill(E)
