Karen you saw three swans wow thats a good sign - perhaps those that flew away that Mr. Farmer saw flying overhead the other day will now decide Denbury is the place to call home! The lake does look lovely today - still and calm and peaceful, with a slight breeze just ruffling the surface and ducks making tracks across from the bank....Jill(E)

Simon, may I say how stunning your photos are, the Kingfisher's colours just stood out. Loved the badger ones as well as I think they are all favourites of ours. Must ask my son to look at them as he is a very keen photographer. Looking forward to seeing some from you. Thanks again. Elsie

A Few minutes ago i was watching the Swan on the lake there were 3 of them, they looked so beautiful just gliding through the water with no effort at all. Other fowl was visible and they were coming out the bank of the lake area and skimming across the water. Karen Stoke

The Badgers were out in force tonight i saw up to 6 at one time feeding together, there were also 3 at the second drop where Mr Farmer puts the butties. I love how they lie right down to dine they must feel so safe there. One Badger before leaving the feeding station circled the spot and marked up in 3 spots around it before it trotted off to explore the country side, i would love to be able to see where they go. Simon the photos of the Badger, are amazing thank you for sending them in for us to see, the kingfisher, didn't disappoint your camera did it, it is quite beautiful, good to hear you and your family had a wonderful time. Thanks for all the kind comments regarding my photos in the gallery, i enjoy wandering round Denbury with the camera and its nice that people appreciate the end results. Elaine the photos of the kingfisher on the gatepost is the same bird its just an optical illusion that make the beak look different lenghts. We had a great time there this year the kids loved it and as they were happy and relaxed it made the holiday so much nicer for their hard working parents. Only another 500 photos from the week to sort thro so i'd better get on with it , Thanks again Simon

Thanks for a very interesting diary Mr. Farmer and what beautiful pictures on the Gallery. Good luck with changing the bees over to their new hive. I have this picture in my mind of you in your bee keepers suit running over the fields with a swarm of bees in hot pursuit! Still, will make a change from being chased by sheep or emus! Only joking, I hope all goes well. It will also be great if the swans come back to stay.
May not be able to look in on here too much in next few days as two grandsons and daughter-in-law coming from Devon to stay for 4 or 5 days but I am really looking forward to spending time with them. Just hope the rain eases up a bit for a few days. (won't have to water the garden, though.) Bye for now. Gal Pam, Norfolk.

The weather looks lovely on cam 1, not. You are going to get very wet tonight Mr Farmer feeding the badgers.
Loved the photos today, can I ask a question the kingfishers on the metal gate post top are they different birds? I ask this because one has a long beak and on another photo it has avery small beak and wondered if this was a yong one? Do hope the swans you saw do come back Mr Farmer, after all the care and attention you lavished on them!
Posting at 6.12 I assume was Yorky, please sign so we know who has posted and we can reply to you/your comments. Elaine

Thank you for the new entry in the Diary Mr Farmer I do that it was your swans that you saw and hopefully they will return to the lake. Thanks also for the super photos from Simon, He really is a great photographer. I have been enjoying all the details about moths, Im afraid I am one of these idiots that think that you only get fawn coloured moths and didnt realise how many species and colours there are. That is one of the many super things about this forum, I have learned so much since being on it for the past 3 or 4 years. Many thanks to everyone who is helping to educate me Val Perth

How right you are Mr F about the RSPCA looking for donations! Try looking on their website for a 'contact' address or number/email, all you get is how to donate!
I know they do some good work, but my problem was the second problem in a week we had with them. Our son and his family are in Devon at our place, they have been bothered by a cat, with no collar etc, my daughter in law rang me to ask if we knew who it belonged to, I told her we had seen it the other week and wondered if it were a stray. She asked a few of the neighbours who all agreed it seemed to be a stray, so she got in touch with the RSPCA who sent a woman for it - they saw her come and take the cat, but the very next day it was back!!! How come? However, they did get in touch again and this time it seems it's not back. But it does make you wonder how they could let it get away?
Bye the way - fingers crossed for the swans.

Ah yes Elaine the Poplar Hawk moth - looks very much like a dead leaf! Its one of those I found at Dungeness too - thats a very useful moth website and good for ID-ing them and learning about their habits - thanks for putting that up...Jill(E)

Below I have pasted a link to the webpage I found to identify the moth (hope Mr Farmer allows it) It is the first moth on the thumbnails. It actually looks like a dead leaf.

The moth is still resting in its place on the fencing. Where it will no doubt stay until it gets dark tonight. There was also some interesting facts about it. MAinly that it does not eat, it only eats food in the caterpillar stage.Elaine

Morning all - well afternoon now! Thanks for a very informative diary Mr.F and I hope those black swans you saw fly over are indeed the breeding pair and that they were just having a look round and hopefully will decide to come back to stay this autumn.

Thanks also Vicky for the new pics on the gallery - what a superb photographer Simon is! Those close-ups of the badger, swans, deer and kingfisher are brilliant!

Elaine I'm looking forward to seeing your moth you rescued - there are a lot of different Hawk Moths so it will be interesting to see which one yours is. I'm guessing you were right about it being an Ele though as you saw it on the moth site. They are beautiful I think!

Tina glad you were able to get out for a nice sunny walk today and saw lots of good things! Its a bit rainy on and off here (north Essex) and it was too cloudy to see the Perseids meteor shower last night but I will try and remember to watch again tonight if the sky clears.
Off to get some lunch now ....Jill (E) - I remembered this time!

Morning, all from a fairly warm and sunny south Somerset.Have just got back from walking my handsome GSP (alright,I'm biased),and in the field we walked thro I must have seen almost a dozen small blue butterflies.Aren't they lovely? So I took time to look around and watched all the dandelion flock blowing in the wind, more meadow brown butterflies, bees and wasps.Oh,it was good to be out! Then I had to come back to housework! I see the beavers which were recently released into an area in Scotland have produced at least 2 kits. That's wonderful news for the people who work so hard to reintroduce wildlife.Anyway, back to work.Looking after 3 lively grandchildren this afternoon.Tina
