yayayayay an egg, I thought she was acting strange this afternoon, but missed her laying it, I wonder if she will lay any more, just hope they survive if there is a lack of food about
Just copied this from the loch of the lowes blog:
Today is a day that summarises all that Osprey have to cope with in the UK- good and bad.
Firstly, at the Loch of the Lowes nest, our birds have incubated with dedication through a hot still morning and then an afternoon of hail and sleet showers( yes sleet falling on spring blossom!) There have been two fish deliveries to the nest and all seems well- we are now all on vigilant watch for any tiny signs of the eggs hatching.
Elsewhere today our friends at Tweed Valley Ospreys have announced the arrival for their first chick of the season- possibly the first in Scotland this year. Further south at Rutland Water, there are now four chicks, with three at the Manton Bay nest, and one at Site B nest. RSPB Glaslyn in Wales also has two chicks. There are also long awaited osprey eggs now at both the Lake District Osprey project (the first for a new pair of birds at Bassenthwaite) and at Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust Cors Dyfi in Wales too. These latter two sites will have chicks born a full month behind others in the UK, which means a very spread out year- let’s hope it’s a long mild summer so all the chicks are big and fit enough to make autumn migration.
Most worryingly though, news today from our friends in Dumfries and Galloway of a suspected raid on an osprey nest by a human egg thief. The incident happened at the National trust For Scotland Threave Nature Reserve, a fabulous site where a pair of ospreys have been nesting on an artificial platform in a wetland area near the castle for a few years.
Here’s what happened:
“ On the evening of Monday the 21st of May, a disturbance to the Osprey nest was seen near the island. Basically a man with climbing gear and a bag was questioned by a canoeist. We presume he was after the eggs of the Osprey. The nest is under constant watch until hatching. Please be vigilant and let us know if you see any suspicious behaviour around the Threave Estate.” NTS Rangers
It is unbelievable that in this day and age, an unscrupulous and ignorant person would still steal protected birds eggs (or any eggs) , kill the chicks inside, and put at risk the species recovery, for their own selfish and illegal thrills.
And of course this incident shows the vital hard work done by so many unsung locals, volunteers and staff at so many osprey breeding sites across the UK keeping the birds safe. This is , after all , why we still do a 24hr Nest Protection Watch here at Loch of the Lowes – we only wish it were uncessary!
Hooray at last our owl in the box has laid an egg !
Jacqui and Betty I do hope that your coughs improve very soon

Sorry Jacqui that you are still poorly too. I too have never hd a cough like this one. Hopefully we will both be well soon. Betty Canada
Rose thank you for copying the owl comments to the forum ,I thought I heard something similar on the news recently and wondered if that was why they weren’t laying yet, lets hope things pick up and we don’t lose anymore of these beautiful birds
May 2013
21st – here’s an update for those wondering what’s happening with our owls at the moment.
The late winter period typically sees a peak in adult Barn Owl mortality. This is generally associated with the lowest point of the small mammal cycle, with many owls starving at this time and is an entirely natural phenomenon. However, late March this year saw an exceptional increase in adult mortality, and this seems to have extended into April. It was at this time that we apparently lost the resident female at this site, probably to starvation. For those Barn Owls that have survived, life has been tough. Average first egg lay date for the south west in recent years is the middle of April so eggs should have been laid and in the process of hatching by now. However, we currently know of only one confirmed nesting attempt in the south west. There will be others of course, but for the majority food appears to be in limited supply; they haven’t started laying because the females are probably underweight and not yet in breeding condition.
Small mammal densities should start to increase from now through into the autumn so we’re optimistic that at some point we’ll get a breeding attempt. That’s assuming the weather behaves itself this year of course and the small mammal cycle picks up.
Thought some of you might find this interesting , it is from Barn Owl Trust.
Thank you Jacqui, and Betty for the birthday wishes, lucky you having sunshine Betty, it was cloudy here all day. Hope your cough gets better soon and you can enjoy yourself at the weekend with your son

they bought me a very unusual necklace that was a small chunk of meteorite the website refers to it as ‘a piece of cosmic shrapnel from the Campo del Cielo Meteorite Fall in Argentina about 4 to 5 thousand years ago’

I had a lovely lunch with my mum, dad, and brothers at a local pub, and saw my kids when they finished work later in the day
Hello Elizabeth

Happy birthday to you too Jan Herts. Nice that we share the same birthday. It is a holiday here in Canada and a lovely sunny day but I am still sick with this cough. More asthma now I think as I have finished the antibiotics. We are going to celebrate next weekend with my son instead. Hope you had a great day. Betty Canada
Thank you for your birthday wishes Jenny, its been grey and cold all day so I didn’t get my coffee in my garden, but I did hear the swifts when I walked up to my mum’s
we all went out for a lovely lunch at a local pub so still had a good day
I wish the barn owls would get a move on and start laying, have you seen many swallows Mr Farmer
Wishing you a very Happy Birthday Jan, hope that you have a lovely day celebrating ! By the look of the weather I really don’t think that you will be sitting in the garden listening to the swifts as they fly around ! So grey and overcast here but at least it has stopped raining now ! Have a good one anyway !
Love Jenny x
Tina I would Love to attend the Badger protest march but i couldn’t afford to attend unfortunately or I would be there like a shot believe me.. I hate this THICK GOVERNMENT! they just don`t listen do they, Its the same with the plight of our Bees what is wrong with these idiots what`s it got to take before they do listen eh I wonder. I am so very angry about the Badger & Bees Bees are a passion of mine they are Wonderful things they have fascinated me from a junior school days. I did a project on them.. I was trying to save for a hive but I had to spend all the money On Poor Cleos Vet fees left me broke so my sister knows a bloke who comes by them for peanuts so I am told i shall ask her to jog his memory there isn`t anything he does not know about them, so he would be handy. I purchased a very good bee keeping book I want so much to give it my all. Karen Stoke
I pray that the Badger Cull does not go ahead, the thought of some the Badgers suffering makes me very mad, How cruel these people are, In a way they are contradicting themselves seeing that anyone Badger Baiting is fined or given prison sentences. Put some of the MPs in prison for cruelty. Waiting with abated breath as to what Mrs Buffington’s chicks be like when they get bigger, the mind boggles . Apparently there is some very bad stormy weather on the way for parts of the country, including the east of Scotland, and the Pennines, so that means we could get them. Are we going to have a Summer this year!!!!!!. How are you Janice, still improving I hope. Take care all of youxx.
Hello all. Re the badger protest. There is a big protest march in London on 1st June. Assemble 11am Millbank outside the Tate gallery. March begins at midday. Hopefully time for shopping afterwards.
Hope you have a very Happy Birthday Betty
Thank you Janette for my birthday wishes, hopefully the weather will cheer up and I can sit in the garden and listen to the swifts screaming when I have my coffee later
one of my favourite pastimes

So sorry to hear this Mr. Farmer.
My photo of the osprey nest by the road in Florida is on the gallery but was at the end of the photos if you want to check it out. very different to Loch of the Lowes. There is a huge lake just behind the northeast side of the road. Betty Canada
Thank you for putting my photo up on the gallery Mr Farmer, I’d forgotten I sent it in
we had a barbecue on saturday and all you could hear were the swifts it was great

I was hoping the badger cull had been stopped, such a sad thing to be happening, hope the anti’s disrupt lots of the culling and stay safe.
We have lots of lovely screaming swifts now, they are returning to their nesting sites in our high street
As from today the 19th of May please send any photographs to info@denburyfarm.co.uk
Thank you Vicky and Diane for updating the Gallery over the past couple of years.
The Badger Cull is still meant to start from the 1st of June onwards. It is not a 100% that it will start that day.
We had a couple of the Stop the Cull people on the Farm yesterday. We told them we would help the cause in any way we could.
They will start baiting areas near Badger Setts with peanuts and the so called marksmen will return and shoot them. One thing for sure as well as killing Badgers there will be many who are not killed outright and will suffer lingering deaths with their gunshot wounds. Hopefully those anti cull people involved will disrupt a lot of the killing by the ways they have told me. Cant tell you any more at the moment, but I will as soon as I can. If you check on the Internet you will see who is organising the cull in Somerset. One thing for sure is that it is not going to be pleasant for those doing the culling or the antis. And it will for sure backfire on this evil government
Jan Herts I have just looked at the Gallery and saw the face in the entrance of the Owl, box straight away before i read what you had sent with the photo, quite strange.
